Evaluation highlights LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding's carbon-negative technology

Nashville, Tennessee, October 27, 2021/PRNewswire/-To commemorate Sustainability Day, LP Building Solutions (LP) released the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding. The results show that SmartSide stores more carbon than the carbon released during product production and distribution, making it one of the only carbon negative side panel products on the market.

"LP SmartSide products can store carbon for generations, making them a smart choice for sustainable building materials."

The international EPD® system defines EPD as "an independently verified and registered document that conveys transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of the product life cycle in a credible manner." LP conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) and used the survey results Created the first EPD of LP SmartSide, which highlights the climate-friendly properties of LP engineered wood siding and supports it using third-party verification data.

LCA found that LP SmartSide is classified as a carbon-negative exterior wall product, which means that the carbon stored in the product is more than the carbon released during raw material procurement, manufacturing and customer distribution. Unlike LP SmartSide, all non-wood siding products analyzed have a higher net global warming potential (GWP). In fact, LP SmartSide stores 10 times more carbon than fiber cement-based products, reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the production process by 59%.

“LP SmartSide products can store carbon for generations, making it a smart choice for sustainable building materials,” said Donna Kopecky, Director of Sustainability and Public Policy at LP. "When customers choose sustainable wood construction products over energy-intensive building alternatives such as concrete or steel, they are making more responsible and environmentally friendly choices that can benefit the environment in the long term."

"As LP continues its nearly 50-year tradition of sustainable development leadership, the LP SmartSide environmental product statement demonstrates the positive environmental impact of the product on the construction industry and provides more and more construction professionals with valuable resources. Decisions are being made to make more environmentally conscious construction products," said Siding Neil Sherman, Executive Vice President.

LP is committed to ensuring that all products manufactured by LP are made from sustainably sourced wood. The company's forest certification program is verified annually in accordance with the independent standards of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and the Forest Certification and Accreditation Program (PEFC®), highlighting LP's commitment to environmental sustainability. LP believes that its work to build a better world is inseparable from protecting the environment, reducing waste, supporting communities, developing employees, diversifying workplaces, and building economic prosperity for future generations.
