AUSTIN, Texas — The cost of housing in Austin is skyrocketing to the point of unaffordability for many families. That's why for this edition of Daybreak Adventures, the KVUE Daybreak team put on their toolbelts to help with a Habitat for Humanity build!

Habitat for Humanity has built more than 500 homes over the years. Team Daybreak's goal was to help with a small piece of one of those homes.

Our team lead was Ty and our first job was to put up a piece of siding.

"We'll have you guys go to the back," Ty said. "You'll get out a panel and bring it up here."

Easier said than done. The panel was fiber cement, which, as you can imagine, is heavy.

Habitat for Humanity uses the material because it lasts and needs very little maintenance. Once it's nailed in place, it is incredibly strong. And once you add trim, caulk and paint, it's beautiful!

Next up was cutting OSB, or oriented strand board, to fill in the gaps below the roof.

"I don't want to mess this up," Yvonne Nava joked.

But she did a great job with the circular saw! We cut eight pieces at 22 inches — which, it turns out, was too small.

"Didn't you say 22?" Rob Evans asked.

Hunter Williams volunteered to measure.

A quick trip downstairs to cut some more, and then Bryce Newberry finished the job. One nail closer to one more affordable home for an Austin family.

The house the Daybreak team worked on is the same home Rob has been working on every Thursday for the past few months. Habitat for Humanity has a few more months to go to complete the home and would love to have your help!
