New design for proposed apartment building near UCLA campus announced

A seven-story apartment building designed to replace the Lutheran Church of UCLA and its ground parking lot has received a new and improved design from Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects (LOHA).

Developer Landmark Properties, a real estate company headquartered in Athens, Georgia, specializing in student housing communities, submitted a revised plan for the project before the Westwood Design Review Committee meeting on April 7. Although the proposed height remains the same, the composite is reflected in the need for 37 apartments instead of 39. Parking spaces will be slightly reduced from 41 to 40.

Humphreys & Partners designed the first iteration, a modern-style building with gray plaster, metal panels and metal balcony guardrails, and double-height murals on the southeast facade. LOHA's reimagining of the project, known as the icon of Los Angeles, will show many setbacks to break the volume and create a spacious outdoor space.

There will be a combination of two-bedroom, three-bedroom, four-bedroom, and five-bedroom units, ranging in size from approximately 757 to 1,559 square feet. Some units will be reserved for very low-income families, but the exact number is not yet clear.

The Mark will have a series of on-site facilities, starting with a manned lobby accessed through a landscaped courtyard. A 1,698-square-foot fitness center will be located near the lobby, overlooking another internal courtyard. The second floor will feature a spacious study room and a communal terrace, while the third floor will include a so-called "backyard" surrounding the northwest side of the building.

On the fourth floor there is an indoor club room that leads to the pool deck, and the public roof deck will provide unobstructed community views from the sixth and seventh floors. Some private outdoor spaces will also be scattered throughout the building complex.

The exterior features are light gray solid corrugated metal panels, glass and metal mesh railings, fiber cement panels, perforated metal panel screens and glass storefront windows at the entrance. Setbacks and ample greenery on the streets will soften the industrial beauty of the building.

The Mark is located at 10915 W. Strathmore Drive, a short walk from the UCLA campus. Future residents will be able to buy necessities in Westwood Village, where there are Target, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market and CVS, as well as many restaurants and cafes.
